Hi everybody. I only just registered here, hoping to get some help with a few issues I'm having.
A friend recently gave me his old PowerBook G4 12' 1.33 PPC processor notebook. It's running Mac OS X Panther (10.3) so I'm trying to upgrade to Leopard (as Snow Leopard isn't supported). Unfortunately I couldn't find a place to buy it from Apple.com, so a friend gave me a .dmg file he had. It's 6.6GB, so it's supposed to be burnt on a double layer DVD. Problem is, I don't have a double layer DVD, nor a DVD writer on my mac, so I'm trying to put it on my USB pendrive.
So I mount the .dmg, 'erase' the pen drive, go in the pendrive, click on repair, drag the .dmg to 'source' and the USB partition to 'Destination'. It takes ages, and when it does, the 'Mac OS X Install DVD' mounts automatically and a window opens with a big 'Install Mac OS X', and other 2 folders'.
I double click on 'Install MAc OS X', click on 'restart', and it restarts.
It tries to boot from the CD, but fails, and shows a Folder Icon with the finder icon and a question mark flashing on top of it, then it boots normally (on Panther).
SO I though it might be a problem with booting from a USB drive: I downloaded a 4.5GB single layer DVD reduced version and burnt it to a CD with TransMac on my Windows 7 PC, but no luck (same problem).
I then downloaded Mac OS X Tiger (10.4), a 2.5GB .toast file, and burnt it with Alcohol 120% on my Windows 7 PC, but had the same problem.
I tried everything: different software (Disc Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, Superduper!) to 'repair' the various .dmg, .sparseimages, and .toast files I downloaded, but always that same problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance ,
david
